We've seen it on insta and the catwalks, but is this graphic eyeliner trend for you? We take a look at errything you need to know about the biggest makeup artistry trend RN: negative space eyeliner.
What is negative space eyeliner?
In contrast to a standard cat eye flick which is drawn close to the eyelashes, negative space eyeliner focuses on leaving a blank space between the eyelashes and the outside edge of your flick. Simply, it's a cat eye which hasn't been filled in.
This look relies on the negative space, basically the gaps showing bare skin, to create a dramatic and graphic alternative to a classic liner look.
Who's rocked the graphic eyeliner trend?
From Zoe Kravitz to Gigi Hadid, blank space eyeliner is an instagram classic that looks unreal on every skintone.
If you're lookin' for fashion-forward examples, then you can see it struttin' down the catwalk at Phillip Plein and Eudon Choi.

What products do you need?
When it comes to creating a graphic eyeliner look, there are plenty of different methods - and products - you can use to achieve your desired look. However, the basic products you'll require are:
- Foundation
- Either gel or liquid eyeliner
- Setting Powder
Liner will generally sit better when applied on top of a base, and setting powder will help to maintain its longevity.
We'd suggest picking a gel or liquid eyeliner rather than a kohl or pencil eyeliner in order to ensure you can create a sharp line as opposed to a smoked out liner. Although there's a time and a place for a smokey eye (read: every weekend), negative space eyeliner suits a sharp and defined style.
When it comes to creating a statement eye look, we love Illamasqua eyeliner, NYX Professional Makeup eyeliner and Benefit eyeliner, however there are plenty of different options. To help a sista' out, we've left our edit of fave eyeliners below.
The Best Liquid Eyeliners
Liquid eyeliner is great if you wanna get one product and take it with you everywhere. These are perf' for travelling and mid-day touchups.
The Best Gel Eyeliners
If you want a product to werk it, then look to a gel eyeliner. Although great for creating the sharp and definitive you need for graphic eyeliner, use a brush before the product dries to create a smoked out effect.
